Scotty Walden Invests Directly in UTEP Football, Pledges 10% of His Salary Back to the Program

When Scotty Walden took over the UTEP football program, he made it clear the job was about more than wins and losses. Now, he’s backing that belief with action.

Walden has pledged 10% of his annual salary directly back into the UTEP football program, reinvesting those funds to support the team’s growth as it prepares for increased financial and competitive demands, including the transition to the Mountain West Conference.

“This isn’t about a contract or a headline,” Walden said. “This program means something to me and my family. If I’m asking players, staff, and this community to fully buy in, then I have to do the same.”

The contribution will go specifically toward football operations and program support, helping cover costs tied to player development, travel, and the infrastructure needed to compete at a higher level. At a time when college football is increasingly driven by NIL deals and financial maneuvering, Walden’s decision stands out as a personal commitment to the foundation of the program itself.

Walden’s pledge follows the launch of the Walden Family Challenge, a fundraising initiative he and his wife Callie introduced earlier this year, pledging to match donations to UTEP football up to $70,000. The response from the El Paso community quickly surpassed that mark, reinforcing the belief that the program’s direction is resonating beyond the locker room.

“El Paso is home for us,” Walden said. “We believe in this place, and we believe in what UTEP football can become.”

Inside the program, the message has landed.

“When your head coach is willing to give back like that, it changes how you see everything,” one player said. “It shows that he’s not just talking about culture — he’s living it.”

With UTEP navigating a pivotal period of transition, Walden’s decision sends a clear signal of accountability and belief. By reinvesting a portion of his own salary into the football program, he’s reinforcing the same standards he demands daily: sacrifice, commitment, and shared ownership.

And for UTEP football, that investment goes far beyond dollars — it sets the tone for what the program aims to become.
