UTEP is sitting at +7500 to win the Mountain West Conference Championship in year one of its new league, and if you’re a Miners fan checking the boards, that number probably stings a little. Let’s not pretend otherwise. On the other hand it could be a sting for the books if Walden and team can surprise us all. A $100 bet could yield a $7,500 payment at the end of a season all Miner fans would never forget.
But, let’s actually unpack what that price is really telling us.
The Miners enter their Mountain West debut as one of the league’s biggest longshots — and that’s exactly where a rebuild starts.
A +7500 number isn’t really a prediction about UTEP’s ceiling — it’s a reflection of unknowns. New conference, new opponents, a roster that has under gone construction from a season ago, and a program still trying to find consistency after going 2-10 a year ago. Books price uncertainty harshly, and right now UTEP carries more uncertainty than almost anyone walking into the Mountain West for the first time.
That’s the hard truth. Here’s the part that matters more.
This isn’t a program standing still. Scotty Walden brought in quarterback EJ Colson out of the transfer portal, a guy who threw for over 2,100 yards in a proven system last season, and the staff went out and got skill talent at running back too. The defense, by most early outlooks, is the bigger question mark after regressing down the stretch last year — but that’s also the side of the ball that can turn fastest with the right portal additions and a full offseason under this staff.
New Mountain West
The Mountain West itself is in total flux. Boise State, Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, and Utah State — five of the conference’s most established programs — are gone. The league that UTEP is stepping into isn’t the Mountain West of the last decade. It’s a conference rebuilding its own pecking order at the same time the Miners are trying to find theirs, and early outside projections have UNLV and New Mexico setting the pace early, with Hawaii and North Dakota State a step behind.
That’s the door UTEP is walking through. Nobody’s circling them as a contender yet — not Vegas, not the analysts, not anybody outside the building. But “nobody’s circling them yet” is also exactly how every rebuild starts before it doesn’t.
What to Watch: Keep an eye on how fast that defense gels in fall camp, and watch what EJ Colson looks like running this offense with a full spring and summer under him. A signature, ranked-team upset early in conference play — UNLV or New Mexico on a short week — is the kind of result that would move this number and start changing the conversation in El Paso. The Miners aren’t being talked about as a Mountain West favorite right now. The job this season is to make sure that’s not still true a year from now.
